Annie Fox for Teens... Hey, Terra!

Annie (AKA Hey Terra!) has been around long enough to have experienced a lot of what Life can dish out. But, it hasn’t been so long that she's forgotten what it's like to be your age. Check out some of the thousands of email questions teens from around the world have sent to Terra. You may learn something useful from her answers:

Friends and Enemies:
“He's telling my secrets!”

Hey Terra,

My best friend who I've known forever always wants to listen to my stories and so I tell him everything. But lately he's been ignoring me and if I do tell him my secrets he will tell his rude friends and they will tell everyone. Does he not like me as a friend anymore? Or is he getting tired of me doing all the talking? I always ask him what's new and he never says anything so I can't let him talk to me because he doesn't want to. What should I do?

Help

Dear Help,

A "secret" is supposed to be told in trust that the other person is not going to blab it all over the place. To betray the confidence of a "best friend" is totally unacceptable. It's time you had an honest conversation with your friend and find out why he is "ignoring you" and "telling your secrets." What's up with that? Something has changed and it's up to you to find out what it is. If he's unwilling to be honest with you, then I suggest you create distance, stop telling him secrets, and protect yourself from future betrayal.

In friendship,

Terra
