Annie Fox for Teens... Hey, Terra!

Annie (AKA Hey Terra!) has been around long enough to have experienced a lot of what Life can dish out. But, it hasn’t been so long that she's forgotten what it's like to be your age. Check out some of the thousands of email questions teens from around the world have sent to Terra. You may learn something useful from her answers:

Communication Problems:
“I don't want to go to my girlfriend's dad's house.”

Hey Terra,

Me and my g/f have been seeing each other for 3 months. She wants me to come to her dad's house but she lives 30 minutes away from me and I would have to take the bus to get there. I don't feel comfortable going to her dad's. We always hang out at my house or her mom's house but never at her dad's. Today she asked me to go to her dad's and when I said no, she hung up on me. I don't know what to do with her. I love everything about this girl but she makes me mad sometimes and I don't know what to do.

Help

Dear Help,

It sounds like a reasonable request your gf's making for you to come to her dad's house and yet you say you "don't feel comfortable" going there. I can respect that, but there must be a reason you feel this way. Aside from the 30 minute bus ride, why else don't you want to go to her dad's house? Have you met him before? Do you dislike him?

If you haven't been 100% honest with your gf about why you don't feel comfortable she's probably feeling frustrated and confused and that's why she hung up on you. But there's really no good to come from her being mad at you and your being mad at her. It would be much healthier for your relationship if you learned to talk things through when they come up.

I suggest you take a look inside yourself and find out where your feelings of discomfort toward her dad are coming from. Then talk to your gf about it and see if you can come up with a compromise.

In friendship,

Terra
